The four permanent adult teeth known as wisdom teeth are placed at the top and bottom back corners of your mouth. A wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical operation that removes one or more of these teeth. A wisdom tooth that is impacted (lacks enough room to erupt) and is causing discomfort, an infection, or other dental issues will most certainly require extraction. A wisdom tooth extraction can be done by a dentist or an oral surgeon. Some dentists and oral surgeons advise wisdom tooth extraction even when impacted teeth aren't currently posing any health risks. A small cut (incision) will be made in the gum to gain access to the tooth if it hasn't broken through the gum yet. It can also be necessary to remove a tiny portion of the bone that surrounds the tooth. In order to make it simpler to remove the tooth through the incision, it could be divided into smaller pieces. If the tooth has already penetrated the gum, an incision is not as necessary.
